Default Confusing limit of a 1000 connections

Where did the limit of a 1000 connections come from really?
It makes networking difficult on so many levels.

Today I got an invite, and when I tried to accept, I got the message that:
"You're too close to the maximum number of allowed connections (1000) to send that many connections requests. If you want to send them you'll need to remove some of your existing connections or wait until we increase this limit. Sorry!"

Below is another message saying that "You know 3242 people that you haven't connected with yet."

Am I the only one that finds this to be confusing?
A) I am not actively inviting anyone. My business partner is inviting me, and I get a message that I'm sending too many connection requests
B)There is a limit of a 1000 connections, where all other networks that I know of have no such limit
C) After informing me that I cannot even accept an invitation to connect, the same page encourages me to invite 3.2 times as many people as I can possibly connect with.

Who can explain the rationale behind both the limit, and the contradicting messages?
For the record 1 - I do not invite many people, and I generally accept only the ones from people I know and "Ignore" the ones from people I don't know.

Thank you for your clear articulation of the limitations and quirkiness of our connections management system. We are clearly not optimized for the well-connected individuals in the Plaxo membership, but with discussions such as this, we hope to change the situation.

While other networking sites often do have limits in place regarding the size of your network, they typically are quite a bit higher that our current offering.

Your three main points all need to be addressed and I'll do what I can to help move this issue forward.

I don't have any suggestions or alternatives to offer you today, but I thank you for your feedback/input!
