Using Portable Contacts to get data into Plaxo

I am an application developer, looking for a way to import contacts into the Plaxo address book. I have been through the Portable Contacts API, but to me it seems that it's only possible to retrieve Plaxo data, and not to subscribe to an external Portable Contacts provider. Is there anyone who can point me in the right direction?
